Tips for maintaining your personal computer
- Preventative maintenance is best.
- PC enemy No. 1: food and drinks. Keep them away from your computer.
Keyboards
- keyboards gather dust. Gently vacuum or blow out with compressed air.
- keys can be wiped gently with a damp cloth.
Split liquids on keyboards
- Turn off the computer and unplug the keyboard.
- Do not turn the keyboard upside down as liquid may seep into the circuit board.
- Tilt the keyboard slightly to allow the liquid to run off.
- Do not use heat to dry the keyboard as the circuit board may crack inside the case.
- Plug the keyboard back in before turning the computer back on
Foreign objects
- can be removed by gently prying off the key cap (if it pops off then you have not been very gentle!).
The Mouse (Tracking ball)
- Dirt and dust can prevent your mouse from working properly.
- Turn the computer off.
- Turn the mouse upside down.
- Turn the little round panel anti - clockwise about a quarter of a turn.
- Remove the panel and the tracking ball.
- clean the ball with mild soap and water dry thoroughly.
- Gently use a toothpick or your fingernail to clean and build up of dirt from around the middle of the roller.
- Reassemble the mouse.
Monitors
- Ensure adequate of air circulation around the monitor.
- Keep vent holes clear.
- Spray grass cleaner onto cloth to clean screen.
- check putting monitor (up to 20 kg) on top.
Printers
- Always refer to Manual first.
Jams
- Turn off (laser printer), remove all jams very gently.
- Look for arrows and other indicators of directional feed path.
Printing Problems
- Refer to Manual first.
Cartridge Replacement
- If toner is low in laser print, remove cartridge and shake back & forth to redistribute ink.
- Don't touch ink jet nozzles or copper contacts (ink jet, bubble je).
Delete Items From The Print Queue Or Pause Printing
- Method varies slightly with different operating systems.
Delete or pause printing
>Start >Settings >Control Panel
>Printer (or printers and faxes)
>Double click on the selected printer
>Use the printer menu on the main menu bar to pause printing or delete items from the print queue.
Floppy disks
- Floppy disks are ideal for backing up work or transporting data from one machine to another. (Never rely on a floppy disk for important files. Always have a back up, preferably two back ups.)
- Floppy disks are fragil. Keep floppy disks away from heat, dust, magnetic sources (that means on top to your computer and top of speakers also).
- Use a soft tipped pen to write on the label before you put the label on.
- Don't try to remove old labels. (Partially removed labels and sticky bits can cause the disk to get stuck in the disk to get stuck in the disk drive.
Scan a Floppy disk for Errors

> Select 31/2 floppy (click once)
file Menu > Properties > Tools > Check now

Automatically fix file system errors
and
Scan for and attemp recovery of bad sectors.
